Seeking Patient Information in Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Investigation

The FBI’s Nashville Division-Memphis Resident Agency is seeking to identify potential victims who were patients of Poplar Avenue Clinic. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar was recently charged with Enticement and Inducement to Travel to Engage in Illegal Sex Acts, Adulteration of Single Use Devices, Mislabeling of Reprocessed Single Use Devices, Adulteration of Hysteroscopes Cleared for Reprocessing, and Health Care Fraud.

The FBI believes Dr. Kumar primarily targeted patients between the timeframe of September 2019 to April 2024. Dr. Kumar is a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State of Tennessee as a specialist in oncology and gynecology in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Kumar owns Poplar Avenue Clinic, which is a professional association that purported to provide women’s health care services in the state of Tennessee.

Dr. Kumar allegedly sexually abused women by conducting medically unnecessary gynecologic procedures with medical devices that he held under unsanitary conditions and reused on patients when they were required to be disposed of or properly reprocessed. Dr. Kumar did not inform patients that he was reusing “single use” or improperly reprocessed devices before he inserted the devices into their vaginas. He also billed Medicare and Medicaid as if the procedures were medically necessary and he had used a new or properly reprocessed device for each procedure.

The charges and allegations contained in the indictment are merely accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law. If convicted, the defendant’s sentence will be determined by the Court after review of the factors unique to the case, including the defendant’s prior criminal records (if any), the defendant’s role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.

If you and/or your minor dependent(s) were victimized by Dr. Kumar or have information relevant to this investigation, please fill out this short form.

If you know of someone else who has possibly been victimized by Dr. Kumar, please encourage them to complete the form themselves.
