On September 10, 2024, the Springfield Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Springfield Bomb Squad Task Force will be hosting a Chemical Industry Outreach Workshop in Decatur, Illinois. The C.I.O.W. is a one day training session consisting of classroom presentations and explosive range demonstrations of improvised or homemade explosives that is open to first responders, law enforcement, chemical industry and academia personnel. The workshop is designed to increase awareness of commercial off-the-shelf products that could be used as explosive precursor materials and to demonstrate the effects of the resulting explosives.

The classroom portion of this training will be held in the morning at the Scovill Zoo, Educational Building, 71 S. Country Club Road, Decatur, Illinois. The lecture will focus on FBI initiatives and capabilities, chemical threats, and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The afternoon session will consist of heading to a local explosives range, for a live demonstration of various improvised explosives, most of which can be mixed using common household chemicals, and could be included in IEDs. This demonstration is designed to underscore the potential danger posed by these chemicals.

Who Should Attend: Law enforcement, first responders, and representatives from the chemical industry and academia.

Demo Description: Dress will be casual, but be prepared for a 2-hour demonstration outside. Cameras and video equipment will be permitted during the demonstration, but are limited to private use only.
