Civil Rights Cold Case Records Collection Act

The Civil Rights Cold Case Records Collection Act (CRCCRCA) was enacted on January 8, 2019, and mandates the expeditious public release of records related to Civil Rights (CR) cold cases dated 1940 through 1979. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Department of Justice (DOJ), and FBI must review records to determine if all or part of the records are protected information and should not be released to the public. As part of this Act, NARA is mandated to initiate the Civil Rights Cold Case Records collection for subsequent release to the public. Further, the CRCCRCA requires NARA to provide notification to a victim’s NOK at least seven (7) days prior to the records being made public.
